This year’s Connecting With History Series begins with an in-depth discussion of the popular book “Rockford’s Forgotten Driving Park” written by local historian Amanda Becker. The lecture begins at 2 pm in the Lakeview Rooms.
Local thrill-seekers at the turn of the century knew that all the action was at the Driving Park. But few today know the drama buried beneath a West End subdivision in 1890. At the height of the horse racing craze in Rockford prominent Rockford businessmen raised $25,000 to build a harness racetrack.
This lecture will address the financial aspects of the track and how it evolved over time to stay relevant in ever-changing community culture.
Advance registrations are encouraged; however, walk-ins registrations are welcome the day of the lecture.
