MACHESNEY PARK — Tropical Smoothie Cafe has opened its first restaurant in the village, bringing its mix of made-to-order smoothies and fresh sandwiches to the corner of North Second Street and Illinois 173.
The national chain opened today at 10083 N. Second St. Earlier this month, it opened its first location in the region at 1998 McFarland Road, suite 3, in Rockford.
“It’s very good for our residents and the public to have different variety of restaurants,” Mayor Steve Johnson said. “I’m a big enthusiast of giving people different choices. This is going to be a big win in bringing more people to our area.”

The new restaurant is part of a 5,800-square-foot building that also houses a Five Guys burger restaurant, which is expected to open later this summer. There is space for a third tenant that has not yet been announced.

Tropical Smoothie Cafe also serves paninis, flatbreads, wraps and healthy sides such as its kale apple slaw, which is made in-house. The local restaurants are run by SERVE Hospitality Group, one of the largest franchisees of Tropical Smoothie Cafes.
A grand-opening celebration that will include deals and specials for customers is slated for next Friday.
