ROCKFORD — Amazon has officially renewed “A League of Their Own,” the series centered around the historic Rockford Peaches women’s baseball team, for a second and final season.

The show will conclude with a four-episode run, Variety reported Wednesday. Fans of the show had been pushing for more episodes with the hashtag #morethanfour on social media after it was first reported about a month ago that Amazon planned to end the series with an abbreviated season. The first season was eight episodes.

“While it’s not everything we might have hoped for, I’m celebrating today because I’m so happy to be back with these characters,” co-creator Will Graham said on Twitter. “We’re in the room, cooking up a next chapter that we’re excited about. We hope you’ll love it.”

The Prime Video series was based on the classic 1992 Penny Marshall film with the same name, but it examined heavier topics around race and sexuality than the 31-year-old movie. It stars co-creator Abbi Jacobson, D’Arcy Carden, Chante Adams, Melanie Field and Kate Berlant.

The creators and stars of the show came to Rockford last summer to debut the series at the historic Coronado Performing Arts Center.

A date for the debut of the second season has not been announced.

“We wouldn’t be here without the incredible passion of the global audience for the show. Everything you all have done has helped immensely,” he wrote. “Your voices have helped. Thanks for caring about our show. We don’t take it for granted!”
