ROCKFORD — Edgebrook Shopping Center is working to find a new tenant to fill the space left vacant by the closure of Mary’s Market, the center’s management company said Thursday.

The cafe and bakery at 1649 N. Alpine Road had temporarily closed earlier this year with plans to open in time for for Music on the Mall at the start of this month. Those plans, however, changed, and Mary’s Market opted to close permanently.

“Edgebrook is exploring many options to fill the space previously filled by Mary’s Market,” Sandy Dingus, marketing and events coordinator for Orput Companies, which manages Edgebrook, said in a statement to the Rock River Current. “With the wonderful location and great foot traffic experienced by our tenants, we look forward to filling it with a business that will continue enhance the overall Edgebrook experience.”

Dingus noted that Edgebrook has another new tenant, Evolve Dance Co., moving in later this year in the space next to the Postal Shoppe and below Lucha Cantina. She said Evolve will bring new excitement and more people to enjoy the shopping center while the company works to fill the void from Mary’s Market.

“While we work to fill the space, we encourage shoppers to enjoy other long-standing restaurants at Edgebrook, including Bakers Street Burgers and Lucha Cantina,” she said. “Local produce and regionally sourced food can be found at Van Laars and our weekly farmers market takes place on Wednesdays, offering fresh food, plants, baked goods, honey and jams and more.”

The Edgebrook location was the second Mary’s Market to close this year. In February, the company closed its cafe on on Bluestem Road in Roscoe and now uses the space for catering and special events.

Mary’s Market has two other locations in the area: 4431 E. State St. and 2636 McFarland Road.
