Referee Tim Peel had officiated over 1,300 games and was set to retire at the end of this season, but the NHL decided to speed up his retirement after he was caught on mic saying he wanted to call a penalty on Nashville on Tuesday night.

Five minutes into the second period of the Predators and Red Wings game on Tuesday, Peel called a tripping penalty on Nashville and was then heard over an open mic saying “it wasn’t much, but I wanted to get a f—ing penalty against Nashville early.”

Clearly this call into question the integrity of the game and that is something the NHL won’t allow to be tarnished. Peel is now banned and will not work another NHL game.
