Stop Obsessing over your Teen's Life
Hey!
As usual I don't have much time...but something that's been on my mind is how overly obsessed I can get about my 15 year old daughter's life. Obviously I want and should be involved. But sometimes I'm spending waaaay too much time worrying about her every move and happiness level and every aspect of her life that it's causing me constant anxiety...which isn't healthy for either of us. Our kids need to learn to cope on their own and fix their own issues and problems. So here are 6 ways to help you manage your concerns & anxiety...and stop obsessing...
1. Trust and respect her independence: Recognize that your daughter is growing up and needs space to develop her own identity. Trust her ability to make decisions and respect her need for privacy and personal space.
2. Focus on open communication: Instead of obsessing over her life, create an environment of open and honest communication. Encourage her to share her thoughts, feelings, and experiences with you. Be a good listener and avoid being judgmental or overly critical.
3. Set healthy boundaries: Establish clear boundaries for yourself and your daughter. Respect her personal space and privacy, and communicate your expectations regarding her behavior and responsibilities. This will help create a healthy balance between involvement and giving her room to grow.
4. Encourage independence and responsibility: Support your daughter in developing independence and taking responsibility for her own life. Encourage her to make decisions, solve problems, and learn from her experiences. This will help her develop confidence and self-reliance.
5. Focus on your own life: It's important to have your own interests, hobbies, and social life. Engage in activities that bring you joy and fulfillment. This will help you maintain a healthy perspective and avoid becoming overly consumed with your daughter's life.
6. Seek support: If you find it challenging to stop obsessing over your daughter's life, consider seeking support from a therapist or counselor. They can provide guidance and help you develop healthy coping strategies.
Remember, it's normal to care about your teen daughter's well-being, but it's important to find a balance between involvement and allowing her to grow and develop her own life. By focusing on open communication, trust, and setting healthy boundaries, you can support her while also taking care of yourself.
Sincerely,
Your Busy af Mom & b103 Midday hostess Lisa Tyler

Building Bridges: A Free Mental Health Community Education Event
On Friday, May 5th at 5 p.m., NAMI Northern Illinois will be presenting Building Bridges, a free mental health community education event at the UW Health Sports Factory. Attendees will hear the deeply inspiring true stories of Kevin Berthia, a suicide survivor, and Kevin Briggs, the first responder who intervened and saved his life. The experience created a lifelong bond, and the two have since become Mental Health Advocates who share their true story of hope and healing. Their stories help people know that they are not alone and that there is help, hope, and a future waiting for them.
Building Bridges starts with a Mental Health Resource Fair where attendees can enjoy hor d’oeuvres and speak to local agencies to learn about where and how to get help. At 6:30 speakers Kevin Briggs and Kevin Berthia take to the stage to share their story of hope, help, and healing.
Building Bridges is a FREE event, but reservations are REQUIRED. Reserve a spot HERE.
NAMI Northern Illinois is an organization of families, friends, and individuals whose lives
have been affected by mental illness. Together they advocate for quality treatment,
equity, understanding, and care. For more information about NAMI Northern Illinois or
