Festival of Lights Ready to Shine at Sinnissippi Park

One of my favorite traditions is almost here, Festival of Lights at Sinnissippi Park! I talk about this every year because it’s something I’ve loved since I was a kid. Growing up, my grandparents and I would go see the lights back in the ’90s when there were only about 11 displays. Now? We’re over 115! The growth is incredible, and it’s all thanks to our amazing community.

Ted from the Festival of Lights committee stopped by the show to give us the inside scoop. This year, the festival is going to be extra special with more dimensional displays, flood lighting, and hundreds of beautifully lit trees including 35 brand-new glistening trees near Santa. Volunteers start in September and work tirelessly to make sure every bulb shines perfectly. It’s a labor of love, and you can see it when you walk through the park.

And here’s the best part: the festival is funded by donations, and every single dollar counts. You can donate online, by check, or even in the park with QR codes. NEW THIS YEAR: B103 has a specially curated playlist made by Santa and his Elves in the North Pole just for the Festival of Lights!

Finding Strength in Pink: Amanda’s Story with Les’ Cleaning Services

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month or as we like to call it here at B103, Pink Month! All month long, we’re proud to partner with UW Health and our Pink Power Partner, Les’ Cleaning Services, to shine a light on strength, hope, and early detection.

This week on The Chelsea & Friends Morning Show, I sat down with Amanda, who’s from Elgin and works with Les’ Cleaning Services. Amanda’s story is one of bravery, community, and the power of knowing your body.

Amanda discovered she carried the BRCA2 gene, which increases the risk for several cancers, including breast cancer. Her decision to get genetic testing quite literally saved her life. During an MRI ordered by her geneticist, doctors found suspicious spots and shortly after, she was diagnosed with stage one breast cancer.

What’s incredible is that Amanda had no symptoms. No lumps, no pain, nothing that would’ve tipped her off. If she’d waited for her first mammogram at 40, her cancer might have gone undetected for years.

“I saved my life by doing that genetic testing and MRI,” Amanda shared. “If I didn’t do that, where would this be four years later?”

Through it all, Amanda has stayed positive, continuing to work and surround herself with an amazing support system. That includes her boss, Leslie, the owner of Les’ Cleaning Services, who stood by her side every step of the way. Leslie and the Les’ Cleaning team even joined Amanda for the recent breast cancer walk, showing what community support really looks like.

“I wanted to stay as normal as possible through treatment,” Amanda said. “Having Leslie, my family, my clients, and everyone cheering me on, it keeps me strong and positive.”

Amanda’s strength is nothing short of inspiring, and her story reminds all of us how important it is to advocate for our health. Whether it’s scheduling that mammogram, talking to your doctor about genetic testing, or encouraging a loved one to get checked, early detection truly saves lives.

Cherry Valley Gets Wild About Reading with Scarecrows on Parade!

Big thanks to Sue and Zarea from the Cherry Valley Public Library for stopping by to chat about one of our favorite fall traditions, Scarecrows on Parade!

This year marks the 13th annual event, and the theme is “Get Wild About Reading.” It’s all about letting your imagination run wild with jungle animals, wild characters, and over-the-top creativity decorating the village.

Sue and Zarea shared how this fun, family-friendly fundraiser brings the community together while supporting the library’s programming all year long. It’s just $1 per vote (and yes, you can vote as many times as you want!) either online or in person at the library. Every dollar goes right back into programs that make Cherry Valley Public Library such an amazing community hub.

The top three scarecrows with the most votes will snag gift cards to local businesses and attractions, and the winners will be announced on Monday, November 3rd.

If you haven’t seen the scarecrows yet, make it part of your fall bucket list,  stroll through Cherry Valley, check out all the creativity on display, and “get wild about reading!”

Listen to the full interview with Sue and Zarea below to hear more about the event, how it got started, and why it’s one of the most beloved fall traditions in the Stateline.
