ROCKFORD — Are you ready to shreddy?

The Snow Park at Alpine Hills is set to open its terrain park for snowboarders and freestyle skiers on Saturday for the first time this season.

The 5-acre snow park is separated into areas for tubing and terrain park features, but both sides use a magic carpet for easy travel up the hill.

The Rockford Park District opened its tubing hill at 4402 Larson Ave. on Dec. 28, but it required more snow to set up the skatepark-like rails and other features in the terrain park. The district was pumping out man-made snow on Friday as it prepared for Saturday’s opening. It will have limited features on the first weekend.

“Our maintenance team has been busy making snow when the conditions have been right,” the Snow Park said on social media.

The hill is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. this Monday for the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday. Regular hours are 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

The snow park is the winter portion of Alpine Hills Adventure Park, a year-round center for thrill-seekers that also includes a mountain-bike course open in warmer weather months. It previously was home to a zip-line course, too, but that closed in 2022 after eight years in business.
