ROCKFORD — Gas prices in the city have dropped an average of more than 18 cents per gallon in the last week.

According to GasBuddy’s survey of 139 stations in Rockford, prices are 59 cents per gallon lower than a month ago and average $3.49 at the pump. That’s still about 17 cents per gallon higher than this time a year ago and $1.34 more than this time in 2020.

Gas costs continue to decline in every state weekly, and prices are still expected to drop below $3 by Christmas day, according to Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy.

“Not only has the decline in gasoline prices lasted five straight weeks, with again every state seeing a weekly decline in its average, but average diesel prices have fallen in 49 states over the last week as well,” De Haan said. “We remain on schedule to see the national average gas price fall below $3 by Christmas, with diesel set to fall 50 cents to $1 per gallon over the next six weeks or so.”

The national average has declined more than 14 cents per gallon and sits at an average of  $3.21 per gallon.
