ROCKFORD — After historic high prices at the pump this summer, gasoline prices in the city have now fallen for a 13th straight week.

However, the average cost for a gallon of gas remains about 52 cents higher than this time a year ago, according to data from GasBuddy.

The average price of a gallon of gasoline fell about 8 cents in the past week to $3.72 today, according to GasBuddy’s survey of 139 stations in Rockford.

Prices here are nearly 38 cents per gallon lower than a month ago.

According to GasBuddy, the cheapest station in Rockford was priced at $3.38 per gallon on Sunday while the most expensive was $4.14.

The national average price of gasoline also declined nearly 8 cents per gallon to an average $3.67, according to GasBuddy’s data from more than 150,000 stations across the country.

“We continue to see the national average price of gasoline decline, now for the thirteenth straight week,” Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, said in a news release. “But, we’re seeing drastically different price behaviors from coast to coast, with some areas seeing noticeable increases while others are seeing decreases.”

De Haan said refinery issues in Califorina are leading to increases out west, and supply remains tight for the East Coast. He said it’s difficult to predict whether the price declines will continue for another week.

“For now, I believe the drop in prices will overpower the increases, leading to potentially another decline this week,” De Haan said. “But we’re in a very fragile time and certainly could see a broader move higher in the weeks ahead.”
